This article goes you through the steps you need to perform to get started with VMmanager.

Mandatory steps

  • Navigate to Cluster settings→ Cluster nodes to add a node where virtual machines will be created. Make sure that the server you are connecting as a node meet the requirements described in the articles Cluster node configuration and Adding cluster nodes;
  • Add a pool of IP addresses that will be allocated for newly created virtual machines or integrate VMmanger with IPmanager. Learn more under IP pool management
  • Navigate to Cluster settings→ OS templates to set up templates of the operating systems that will be deployed on virtual machines. For more information please refer to OS template management.

Optional steps

  • Navigate to Management→ Users and Create a user who will be the owner of virtual machines. More information can be found under Access levels;
  • Check Storage templates settings in  Cluster settings→ Storage templates. By default, the installer creates a "File system" storage named "File". The storage created based on such a storage will be located locally on the cluster node. More information can be found under Storage types and How to connect a storage;
  • Check your network settings in Cluster settings→ Networks. A "Bridged networking" is created by default. You can create an additional bridge if needed. Learn more in Network management;
  • Navigate to Cluster settings→ VM templates to check the configuration of VM templates. The system creates a default template with pre-defined resources. VM resources are RAM, CPU/kernels, CPU usage priority, Disk operations, Disk size, Storage, and Network. Edit the default template or create additional VM templates. Learn more in Create a virtual machine template.

Recommendations

  • To speed up the OS installation, we strongly recommend to set up the caching proxy server. Refer to the article Speed up OS installation using a caching proxy-server;
  • If you want to use IPv6, check the corresponding settings in  IPv6 configuration;
  • Change the control panel address in  Settings → Control panel address. To connect an SSL certificate, go to SettingsControl panel addresses → select an IP address → Certificates button → Add button → specify the certificate details → OK. The addresses are added into the ihttpd configuration file (the default location is /usr/local/mgr5/etc/ihttpd.conf).

    Note

    Make sure the redirect to the SSL-protocol is not configured for the address which is specified first in the listen section of the configuration file. Otherwise, you may face the issues when installing an operating system on a virtual machine.
